The west side from Luz-Saint-Sauveur is 19 km at 7.4% to 2,115 m, with the ski station of Barèges halfway and the last 4 km above it steeper than the average suggests. The road is wide and the gradient even, so it rewards a rider who can settle into a pace and punishes one who cannot. The Pyrenees' most-used pass in the Tour, from its first crossing in 1910.
