The Bormio side, 21.5 km at 7.1% to 2,758 m, the highest paved pass in Italy and second-highest in the Alps. The road climbs out of Bormio through a series of tunnels and galleries, then opens into a valley of hairpins that stack on one another below the summit. It is quieter than the Prato side and steadier, without the forty-eight numbered bends, and it is where the Giro's Cima Coppi is most often placed.
