From the shrine at Covadonga the road climbs 12.1 km at 7.2% to the lakes at 1,100 m, with a steep section called La Huesera in its middle third where the gradient sits above 12% for a kilometre. The top flattens and even descends briefly before the final rise to the Lago de la Ercina. The Vuelta a España's most-used summit finish, since 1983.
