Six hundred metres of cobbles at 11.6%, steepening to 22% between banks that close the road to the width of a farm track. The stones are uneven and the gradient does not relent, so a rider who loses momentum walks; in the Ronde van Vlaanderen that has meant whole groups on foot. Removed from the race after 1987 and brought back in 2002 once the road had been relaid.
