From Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne the road climbs 11.9 km at 7.1% through the forest to 1,566 m, on a gradient that barely changes from bottom to top. On its own it is a hard, regular col; in practice it is the first half of the Galibier, with 5 km of descent to Valloire between the two.
