The south side, 8.5 km at 6.9% from the Col du Lautaret, which is already at 2,058 m. The road is exposed from the first metre, with no trees and long straight ramps across the mountainside, and the last 2 km after the tunnel entrance are the steepest. Shorter than the Valloire side and reached from a col rather than a valley floor, which is why the Tour takes it when the stage comes up from Briançon.
