From Arreau the D918 climbs 12 km at 6.5% to 1,489 m, through forest for most of the way, with the steepest kilometres in the middle. A pass that is almost always climbed in company with something bigger, the Tourmalet on one side or the Peyresourde on the other, which is why the Tour has crossed it more than fifty times without it ever deciding a stage on its own.
